Georgia's Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire (OCI) routes agent and agency licensing through an outside vendor rather than a state-run application portal, with Pearson VUE handling both the exam and back-office licensing support. Prelicensing hours are short and line-specific — 8 hours for Personal Lines, 16 for Property and Casualty, none for Travel or Title — and a 2025 law (HB 410) is moving agency renewal dates off a uniform December 31 schedule and onto each agency's original approval month starting with the 2026-2027 cycle. Georgia also grants a 4-hour CE reduction to producers with 20+ years of continuous licensure.

How to get licensed

  1. Confirm your prelicensing hours

Georgia's prelicensing course length depends on the line: 16 hours for Property and Casualty (or two 8-hour P&C courses), 8 hours for Personal Lines, 8 hours for Variable Products (you need an existing Life license first), and 5 hours of self-study for Credit. Travel and Title agents skip prelicensing and the exam entirely.

  2. Register for and pass the exam

Pearson VUE administers Georgia's insurance licensing exams. Review the Georgia Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook and register at pearsonvue.com before scheduling; test length runs 1–2 hours depending on the license type.

  3. Complete fingerprinting

Submit fingerprints electronically through the GBI's approved vendor using OCI's service code 2TGJ6B, after your license application is filed. This triggers your state and federal criminal history background check.

  4. Apply for your license

The fastest path is to apply through InsureTrek — we file your Georgia application for the state's fee, pulled from NIPR at the moment of application. A notarized Citizenship Affidavit and a copy of a secure ID are required with every application.

  5. Wait for approval

OCI's average turnaround for a complete electronic application is 14 business days. You'll get an email once your license is issued — Georgia doesn't mail a paper license.

Renewal & CE

Renewal window — CE and renewal are due on or before the last day of the licensee's birth month, on a two-year cycle. Online renewal opens 60 days before your expiration date.

Grace period: A license inactivated for non-renewal or CE non-compliance can be reinstated within 12 months by paying the reinstatement and late fees, completing any outstanding CE, and being re-fingerprinted if the license has been inactive more than 6 months.

Non-active licensees who file their biennial renewal on time are exempt from CE. Reductions for teaching, legislative work, journalism, or insurance-related research require filing form GID-101E-AL.

24 total CE hours per renewal term, including 3 ethics hours.

Producers newly selling annuities must complete the one-time 4-hour Annuity Best Interest course (Rule 120-2-94), effective for business written on or after August 1, 2023. Excess CE hours carry forward to the next filing period, capped at 50% of the biennial requirement; ethics hours beyond the 3-hour minimum carry forward too but can't be reused to satisfy a future period's ethics requirement.

For agencies and non-residents

Agencies, appointments & DRLP

Every Georgia agency location must have at least one licensed agent whose primary place of business is that location, referred to as a Responsible Agent. Agency names containing restricted words like "Insurance," "Health," "Annuity," or "Life" need a separate name-approval step before licensing, typically decided within one business day. Agency licenses renew every two years; under HB 410 (signed May 14, 2025), renewal dates are shifting from a uniform December 31 schedule to each agency's original approval month, starting with the 2026-2027 cycle.

Georgia permits just-in-time appointments — carriers file the appointment electronically rather than in advance of a producer's first sale. The appointment fee rose to $25 per appointment effective January 1, 2026 (it was $20 for appointments processed in 2025).

Appointments — Deadlines: Appointment termination becomes effective on the date the carrier supplies on the termination transaction; carriers must specify that date when filing.

Steps outside NIPR

Georgia approves the agency name before it will process a license application, and the approval takes several business days, so it is the first thing to start.

  1. Get the agency name approved. Submit the agency name for approval through the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance. Approval takes several business days.
  2. Attach the approval to the license application. Upload the name approval to the Georgia state license application once it comes back.

Non-residents

Georgia accepts non-resident applications through InsureTrek. Applicants with an active home-state license may qualify for an exam waiver if they apply within 90 days of relocating and submit a letter of clearance from their prior state; every applicant, resident or not, still submits a notarized Citizenship Affidavit and a secure ID document.
