## Overview

[Reviewed Sep 6, 2026](#sources)

Maine licenses producers through the Bureau of Insurance, part of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Maine accepts electronic and paper applications — there's no state-specific portal requirement like New York's. Resident producer licenses auto-renew once continuing education is complete, with no separate renewal application or fee, and non-resident individual licenses never expire at all. Starting January 1, 2026, Maine adds a temporary Apprentice Insurance Producer license under 24-A M.R.S. §1420-Q.

## How to get a Maine insurance license

1. ### Confirm you don't need prelicensing education
Maine doesn't require prelicensing coursework for its standard producer lines — Life, Health, Casualty, Property, and Personal Lines. The Bureau's own producer FAQ describes passing the exam and submitting the application, with no coursework step in between.
2. ### Register for and pass the licensing exam
Maine uses [Pearson VUE](https://www.pearsonvue.com/us/en/insurance.html) for producer and adjuster exams. Online-proctored exams ended statewide on May 10, 2025 — you'll need to test in person at a Pearson VUE center.
3. ### Apply for your license
The fastest path is to [apply through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup) — we file your Maine application for the state's $25 fee, pulled from NIPR at the moment of application.
4. ### Wait for approval
The Bureau reviews applications after your exam result is on file. Use [ALMSOnline](https://licensing.web.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/licensing/begin.pl?board%5Fnumber=1040) to check your license status and print a copy once issued.

Prelicensing education

Not required. Standard producer lines require only passing the exam — no prelicensing hours.

Vendor: Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE sets and publishes the current exam fee at registration; the Bureau doesn't set or list it separately.

Not required.

## Maine insurance license renewal

**Renewal window** — Maine licenses renew every two years, at the end of the licensee's birth month, on a cycle keyed to whether their birth year is odd or even (Bureau Rule Chapter 542). New licensees get at least one full year before their first renewal deadline.

**Grace period:** A license out of compliance with CE requirements for at least 60 days is subject to suspension or revocation under 24-A M.R.S. §1484\. No specific late fee is published for missed CE deadlines.

Resident licenses auto-renew once your CE is complete — there's no separate renewal application or fee. Non-resident individual licenses are perpetual and never need renewal.

**24 total CE hours** per renewal term, including 3 ethics hours.

Producers who sell long-term care products need LTC-specific training under Bureau Rule Chapter 68-A, and those selling annuities need suitability training under Bureau Rule Chapter 917 — both required on top of the standard 24 hours.

## Non-resident insurance license in Maine

Maine waives the certification or clearance letter that some states require from a non-resident's home state, and applicants apply the same way residents do, through InsureTrek, for a $55 total fee. The license itself is perpetual once issued: it stays in force without renewal. Non-resident adjusters with an active home-state adjuster license generally skip Maine's exam; adjusters whose home state doesn't license adjusters at all can designate Maine as their Designated Home State.

Apply for a non-resident Maine license [through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup), plus the state fee.

For the steps and fees in every state, see the [non-resident insurance license guide](/guides/non-resident-insurance-license).

## For agencies

### Agencies, appointments & DRLP

Maine requires a separate business entity (agency) license alongside individual producer licenses. The entity itself doesn't hold lines of authority — those stay with the individuals affiliated with it — but every agency must name at least one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP). Resident agency fees total $45 ($15 application plus $30 license); non-resident agency fees total $85.

Both individual producers and business entities must be appointed by an insurer before transacting business in Maine, under the Bureau's producer licensing statute (24-A M.R.S. §1402). The Bureau publishes appointment and termination forms directly on its licensee resources page.
