## Overview

[Reviewed Sep 5, 2026](#sources)

Indiana licenses producers and adjusters through the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI), with applications filed electronically or on the paper NAIC Uniform Application. IDOI covers a wide range of individual license types, from standard Life, Health, and Property & Casualty lines to niche categories like bail/recovery agent, navigator, and title agent. Since May 1, 2012, license expiration has been tied to the producer's birth month rather than a fixed issue-date anniversary, and the state moved to a 24-hour continuing education requirement per two-year cycle in 2012.

## How to get an Indiana insurance license

1. ### Complete your prelicensing education
Hours depend on the line: 20 for Life, 20 for Health, 40 for Life & Health, 20 for Personal Lines P&C, 40 for full Property & Casualty, 10 for Title, and 40 for Independent Adjuster. Public Adjuster and Surplus Lines applicants skip prelicensing hours but need an IDOI-issued Certificate of Test Eligibility or an existing P&C license instead. Your prelicensing certificate is valid for 6 months, so schedule your exam within that window.
2. ### Register for and pass your exam
Indiana uses [Pearson VUE](https://www.pearsonvue.com/us/en/in/insurance.html) as its exam vendor, run jointly with IDOI and Ivy Tech Community College. Exam fees are $69 for Life, Health, Life & Health, Property & Casualty, Personal Lines, and Independent Adjuster; $50 for Surplus Lines, Public Adjuster, Bail/Recovery Agent, Navigator, and any standalone Laws & Regulations exam. Holders of designations like CLU, CFP, ChFC, CPCU, CIC, or AAI, or a bachelor's degree in insurance, can request a waiver of the Laws & Regulations exam.
3. ### Apply for your license
The fastest path is to [apply through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup) — we file your Indiana application for the state's $40 fee, pulled from NIPR at the moment of application.
4. ### Confirm your license is active
Once IDOI processes your application, check your status through its online producer lookup at [in.gov/idoi](https://www.in.gov/idoi/) rather than waiting on a mailed notice.

## Indiana insurance license renewal

**Renewal window** — Indiana licenses renew every two years, expiring on the last day of your birth month (effective since May 1, 2012). Renewal opens 90 days before expiration.

Producers holding a Life license must also complete a one-time 4-hour annuity best-interest training course, required for renewals since July 1, 2024\. Long-term care is a recognized CE course category, but check with IDOI or your CE provider for the current hour minimum.

**24 total CE hours** per renewal term, including 3 ethics hours.

The 3-hour ethics requirement applies to producers licensed in Life, Health, Variable Life, or Variable Annuity; producers holding several of those lines still only need 24 total hours to meet it.

| Line | Hours | Notes |
| ----------- | ----- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Title Agent | 7 | Covers ethics, underwriting, escrow, and RESPA; at least 4 of the 7 hours must be structured or self-study. |

## Non-resident insurance license in Indiana

Indiana grants non-resident producers the same scope of authority their home state licenses them for, with no Indiana prelicensing course or exam required. Apply through InsureTrek for $90, which can run higher under Indiana's retaliatory fee statute depending on what your home state charges Indiana residents. Bail/recovery agent licenses are excluded from this reciprocal treatment, and non-resident title agents who aren't licensed as such in their home state have a separate application path.

Apply for a non-resident Indiana license [through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup), plus the state fee.

For the steps and fees in every state, see the [non-resident insurance license guide](/guides/non-resident-insurance-license).

## For agencies

### Agencies, appointments & DRLP

Indiana requires a separate business entity license for agencies, filed through InsureTrek for a $40 resident fee plus an online processing charge. Every entity must designate at least one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer holding lines of authority identical to those the entity is seeking.

A producer can't act as an insurer's agent without becoming an appointed producer of that insurer, under Ind. Code § 27-1-15.6-14\. Appointment filing runs through the same electronic channels used for licensing.

**Appointments** — Deadlines: Under Ind. Code § 27-1-15.6-15, an insurer that terminates a producer's appointment must notify the commissioner within 30 days of the termination's effective date, then mail the producer a copy of that notice within 15 days of notifying the commissioner. For-cause terminations require certified mail or a nationally recognized overnight carrier. The producer then has 30 days after receiving notice to file written comments in response.

## FAQs

How much does it cost to get an insurance license in Indiana?

IDOI's application fee is $40 for most resident producer licenses. On top of that, Pearson VUE charges $69 for exams like Life, Health, and Property & Casualty, or $50 for Surplus Lines, Public Adjuster, Bail/Recovery Agent, Navigator, and Laws & Regulations exams.

Do I need prelicensing education before the Indiana exam?

Yes, for most lines: 20 hours for Life or Health, 40 for Life & Health or full Property & Casualty, 20 for Personal Lines, and 10 for Title. Public Adjuster and Surplus Lines applicants skip prelicensing hours but need a Certificate of Test Eligibility or an existing P&C license instead.

Where do I take the Indiana insurance licensing exam?

Indiana uses Pearson VUE, run jointly with IDOI and Ivy Tech Community College. Register and review the candidate handbook at pearsonvue.com/us/en/in/insurance.html.

How do I look up or verify an Indiana insurance license?

IDOI publishes a producer license lookup tool on its website at in.gov/idoi; search by name or license number to confirm a license is active.

How long does it take to get an Indiana insurance license?

IDOI doesn't publish a fixed processing-time guarantee. Electronic applications move faster than the paper NAIC Uniform Application; check your status through IDOI's online lookup once you've applied.

Can I get an Indiana non-resident license without retaking the exam?

Yes. Indiana grants non-residents the same scope of authority as their home-state license, with no prelicensing course or exam required. The exception is the bail/recovery agent license, which isn't covered by reciprocity.

How much continuing education do I need, and how often do I renew?

Indiana licenses run on a 2-year cycle expiring on the last day of your birth month. Most lines require 24 CE hours per cycle, including 3 ethics hours for Life, Health, Variable Life, or Variable Annuity producers. Life license holders also need a one-time 4-hour annuity best-interest course, required since July 1, 2024.

Does Indiana license insurance adjusters?

Yes, two types. Independent Adjuster requires 40 hours of prelicensing, a $69 exam, and renews every 2 years with 24 CE hours. Public Adjuster requires an IDOI-issued Certificate of Test Eligibility before a $50 exam, and its license expires annually on December 31, renewing with a $50 fee and a surety bond continuation certificate.
