## Overview

To get a Florida insurance license, you complete prelicensing, pass the state exam, get fingerprinted, and apply to the Department of Financial Services (DFS). Florida calls a producer license an agent license, and the steps are the same for a life agent (2-14), health and life agent (2-15), or general lines agent (2-20) license; only the prelicensing hours change. DFS waives prelicensing for a qualifying insurance degree, a designation like CLU or CPCU, or a year of licensed experience in a reciprocal state, though most of those paths still require the exam. Once issued, a Florida license doesn't renew on a fixed cycle. It stays in force while it's appointed and expires after 48 months without an appointment (Fla. Stat. § 626.431(3)). Continuing education is due every two years by the end of your birth month.

## How to get a Florida insurance license

1. ### Confirm which license you need, and whether prelicensing applies to you
Florida requires an hour-based prelicensing course for most lines (30 hours for Life, 60 for Health & Life combined, 200 for General Lines), but waives it if you hold a qualifying degree with insurance credit hours, an industry designation (CLU, ChFC, CPCU, FLMI, and others), or a year of licensed experience in a reciprocal state applied for within 90 days of establishing Florida residency. Check your specific license PDF on the [DFS licensing page](https://myfloridacfo.com/division/agents/licensing) — the exemption paths differ by license type.
2. ### Complete prelicensing education, if required
Take the state-approved course for your line through an approved provider. Florida Administrative Code Rule 69B-227.260 requires course providers to issue a study manual to every prelicensing student.
3. ### Register for and pass the state exam
Florida's exam vendor is Pearson VUE — register at [pearsonvue.com/us/en/fl/insurance.html](https://www.pearsonvue.com/us/en/fl/insurance.html). You get five attempts per exam type in any rolling 12-month period, and a passing score is valid for one year from the date earned (source: [DFS Examinations page](https://myfloridacfo.com/division/agents/licensing/agents-and-adjusters/exams)).
4. ### Get fingerprinted
Florida uses IdentoGO by Idemia, not Pearson VUE, for fingerprinting. Electronic LiveScan runs $49.50 (state, FBI, and vendor fees combined) plus local sales tax; a fingerprint-card mail-in option is $50.75 plus tax. Results are valid 12 months for new applicants and 48 months for currently licensed Florida agents adding a line (source: [DFS Fingerprinting Information](https://myfloridacfo.com/division/agents/licensing/agents-and-adjusters/fingerprinting-information)).
5. ### Apply for your license
[Apply through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup) and we file your Florida application for the state fee, pulled from NIPR at the moment of application. The application fee is $50 ($10 for Title agents) plus $5 per line of authority. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, their spouses, and honorably discharged veterans are exempt from the application fee (source: [DFS Fee Schedule](https://myfloridacfo.com/division/agents/licensing/agents-and-adjusters/fees)). DFS posts status updates and deficiency notices to your MyProfile account, so create one after you apply.
6. ### Line up a carrier appointment
A Florida license isn't valid to transact business without an active appointment (Fla. Stat. § 626.112(4)). Appointment cost is $60, plus $6 per county for nonresidents physically transacting business there.

Prelicensing education

Life (incl. Annuities & Variable Contracts): 30 hours — Multiple exemption paths available; see DFS 2-14 license page. Health & Life (combined): 60 hours — Or a combination of the 30-hour life course plus a 40-hour health course; see DFS 2-15 license page. General Lines (P&C): 200 hours — Alternate paths: 1 year bona-fide P&C employment, or 1 year as a licensed Customer Rep/Personal Lines/Service Rep plus a 40-hour course. Waived for a qualifying insurance-related degree (9–18 semester hours depending on license), named industry designations (CLU, ChFC, FLMI, CPCU, and others), or a year of licensed reciprocal-state experience applied for within 90 days of establishing Florida residency. The 6-20 All-Lines Adjuster license has no hours-based prelicensing course at all — only exam, designation, degree, an existing General Lines license, or a letter-of-clearance transfer qualify.

## Florida insurance license renewal

**Renewal window** — Florida licenses don't renew. A license stays in force while it holds an active appointment and expires after 48 consecutive months without one (Fla. Stat. § 626.431(3)). Two things recur instead: continuing education, due every two years by the last day of your birth month (Fla. Stat. § 626.2815), and the appointment, which renews every 24 months in your birth month (Fla. Stat. § 626.381).

If you miss the CE deadline, DFS posts a notice of non-compliance and a settlement stipulation to your MyProfile account about 45 days after the compliance period ends, with a $250 fine. If you don't sign it, DFS cancels your appointments, and an unappointed license expires after 48 months. DFS can grant an extension of up to a year for good cause, on request (Fla. Stat. § 626.2815(5)).

**24 total CE hours** per renewal term, including 4 ethics hours.

Licensees with six or more years of licensure are eligible for a reduction to 16 elective hours, for 20 hours in total (Fla. Stat. § 626.2815(3)(b)). Title agents take a 3-hour Ethics/Rules/Compliance course in place of the 4-hour Law & Ethics update.

### Florida license renewal fee

Florida charges no license renewal fee, because a Florida license doesn't renew. The recurring cost is the appointment: $60 every 24 months, with a $25 penalty when an appointment renewal is late.

### How to renew a Florida adjuster license

Florida adjuster licenses don't renew either. The all-lines adjuster license (6-20), which covers independent and company adjusters, and the public adjuster license (3-20) both stay in force while appointed and expire after 48 months without an appointment (Fla. Stat. § 626.431(3)).

To keep one active, complete 24 CE hours every two years by the end of your birth month, including the 4-hour Law & Ethics update for adjusters (Fla. Stat. §§ 626.869(4), 626.2815), and keep an appointment in place. An independent adjuster can self-appoint for $60, and the appointment renews every 24 months in your birth month. A public adjuster also keeps a $50,000 bond in force for as long as the license is held (Fla. Stat. § 626.865(2)).

## Non-resident insurance license in Florida

Florida accepts non-resident producer license applications through InsureTrek, waiving its own prelicensing course for applicants who've held an equivalent license in a reciprocal state for the prior four years and apply more than 90 days after establishing Florida residency (the state exam is still required in that case). Apply within 90 days of establishing Florida residency with a continuous year on that reciprocal license and both prelicensing and the exam are waived. Non-resident appointment costs mirror resident appointments — $60, plus $6 per county actually transacted in. A separate application track exists for applicants without a home state. Florida licenses don't renew, for non-residents or residents. A license stays in force while it's appointed and expires after 48 months without an appointment (Fla. Stat. § 626.431(3)), so there's no non-resident renewal application or fee.

Apply for a non-resident Florida license [through InsureTrek](https://app.insuretrek.com/signup), plus the state fee.

For the steps and fees in every state, see the [non-resident insurance license guide](/guides/non-resident-insurance-license).

## For agencies

### Agencies, appointments & DRLP

Any business location where someone performs a function requiring an agent license must itself hold an insurance agency license (Fla. Stat. §§ 626.749, 626.112). Every agency must name a Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP), an individual who holds an active Florida license and at least one active Florida appointment in a major line (Life, Health, General Lines, or Personal Lines). Resident and non-resident agency applications go through InsureTrek, and DFS posts status updates to the agency's own MyProfile account.

A Florida license has no force to transact business without an active appointment (Fla. Stat. § 626.112(4)); appointments renew every 24 months during the appointee's birth month. Appointing entities file original appointments, renewals, and terminations with DFS through its eAppoint system, and DFS doesn't accept paper appointments. Appointment cost is $60 for both resident and nonresident agents, plus $6 per county for nonresidents physically transacting business in that county. Late-filed original appointments carry a $250 penalty per appointment; late renewals carry a $25 penalty per appointment.

**Appointments** — Deadlines: An original appointment is late when its requested effective date is more than 45 days before the date it's submitted. Appointment renewal runs on a 24-month cycle tied to the appointee's birth month. Late original and renewal appointments carry DFS penalties of $250 and $25 per appointment.

## FAQs

How much does a Florida insurance license cost?

The DFS application fee is $50 for most license types ($10 for Title agents; waived for military members, spouses, and veterans). Add fingerprinting ($49.50 for electronic LiveScan) and a $60 carrier appointment fee once you're ready to write business — prelicensing course and exam costs are separate and vary by provider.

Do I need prelicensing education to get a Florida insurance license?

For most license types, yes — 30 hours for Life, 60 for combined Health & Life, or 200 for General Lines. But Florida waives the course if you hold a qualifying insurance degree, an industry designation like CLU or CPCU, or a year of licensed experience in a reciprocal state applied for within 90 days of moving to Florida.

How do I renew my Florida insurance license?

You don't. A Florida license has no renewal date and no renewal fee. It stays active while you hold an appointment and expires after 48 months without one. What you do owe every two years, by the end of your birth month, is 24 hours of continuing education, including the 4-hour Law & Ethics update.

How do I get licensed in Florida if I already hold a license in another state?

Apply as a non-resident through InsureTrek. If you've held an equivalent resident license in a reciprocal state for the past 4 years, Florida's prelicensing requirement is waived (though the exam usually isn't); applying within 90 days of establishing Florida residency with a year of prior licensure can waive both.

Who is my exam vendor and how do I register?

Pearson VUE administers Florida's insurance licensing exams for a $44 fee. Register directly through Pearson VUE's Florida insurance testing page. You get 5 attempts per exam type within any rolling 12-month period, and a passing score stays valid for 1 year.

How do I look up whether a Florida agent or agency is licensed?

Use the Florida DFS license lookup at licenseesearch.fldfs.com, which searches active and inactive agents, adjusters, and agencies by name or license number.

What is a Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) in Florida?

Every licensed Florida insurance agency must name one DRLP, a licensed individual with an active Florida appointment in a major line (Life, Health, General Lines, or Personal Lines) who is responsible for the agency's compliance. The DRLP's appointment has to be active when the agency application is filed.

How do I renew a Florida adjuster license?

Florida adjuster licenses don't renew. The all-lines adjuster license (6-20) and the public adjuster license (3-20) stay active while appointed and expire after 48 months without an appointment. Keep the license in force by completing 24 CE hours every two years, including a 4-hour Law & Ethics update, and keeping an appointment; an independent adjuster can self-appoint for $60 every 24 months.
